Re: Wetzel County

According to the Wetzel Chronicle dated November 2, 2011, Wetzel County "had West Virginia's highest unemployment rate for September at 11.9%, despite a slight improvement over August's 12.1% jobless rate." To read the rest of the article, go to:

So where are all of the jobs that Marcellus drilling is supposed to generate?

Re: Wetzel County

In response to those who think Pocahontas County's future does not lie in income generated through tourism, here is an actual example that occurred today that you can think about....At the Roadkill Cookoff/Fall Festival, my husband struck up a brief conversation with a young couple about the area, including the popular Greenbrier River Race in the spring. Today he received an email from the couple inquiring about lodging during the event in April 2012 for themselves and ten friends. This single party's visit to the County will generate entry funds for the race, two nights of lodging times six couples, 24 breakfasts and lunches and 12 dinners in local restaurants, canoe and kayak rentals from Appalachian Sports, bicycle rentals from Dirtbean, a non-racing spouse or two browsing in local shops during the race, gas in several cars for the return trip to Virginia, and a likelihood that at least a few of those people will return to Pocahontas County for future recreation or even second home considerations. Let's extrapolate - what if one couple decides to build a vacation house? That would provide jobs for a realtor for land purchase, a local attorney for closing, a local bank for a loan, a contractor, several carpenters, an electrician, a plumber, an excavator operator, Glades for building materials, Richardson's for building materials, Boxley's for gravel and the drivers it takes to deliver, Pritt's for well drilling, Keith Alderman for a septic system, Junior Beverage for a driveway, Wilson's greenhouse for landscape materials, J&P for appliances and furniture, Foodland for groceries, local insurance agents for home policy - and all of the other services that a couple or family need whether building a permanent or part-time home.

I also know of two couples who currently have homes in Pocahontas County who have decided not to go forward with new construction because of the possibility of Marcellus drilling .... how does that extrapolate in employment opportunities lost?
