One man one vote...or one acre one vote?
In the debate on hydro-fracture gas drilling and leasing, I see a divide between one man one vote and one acre one vote in the alignment of opinion. Those county residents who have smaller acreage and who have moved here from other places generally favor a ban and are worried about water resources while those who own the largest tracts and who are from families of generations back in the county have in a large percentage leased. Now this can be analyzed by several formulas but I think the most accurate is to understand that leasing and drilling does require large acreage to begin with so that category of county resident was most likely approached by "land-men" and encouraged to lease. In a democracy, it is one man one vote not counted by the acre. I remain concerned that we should continue to strive to reach consensus on this matter by education and reasonable understanding that property rights mean "right use of property" and is not a legal right to endanger public water reserves. I read a West Virginia newspaper article left at the Commission yesterday touting the safety and regulation of gas drilling and all the benefits. After reading the article I wonder if I am a "nervous nelly" as Lydon Johnson said of those against the Vietnam War or am I remaining on the side of caution knowing that gas drilling is going to effect the environment and cause a radical change to our present bucolic ways and no window dressing or safety measures are going to avoid that? Are we what we are or do we want to be different is the real question. If gas drilling comes, life here will be radically different and that is a fact that no newspaper article can change!!! |
