ARC Complains Commission Acted Unwisely

ARC complained at the last Commission meeting that it not Sandy Mallow should have received the bid award for animal welfare. I believe the Commission has thought long and hard about the issue of animal welfare in view of its obligations and costs restraints. Ms. Mallow's bid was below the $50,000 limit set by the Commission while the bid of ARC exceeded it by $20,000+ . In my estimation, both bidders were well meaning and both have shown in the past an earnest concern for animal welfare and hard work. To me, the deciding factor was cost.

Re: ARC Complains Commission Acted Unwisely

What reason does ARC have to make a complaint about Sandy Mallow? For over 13 years, Sandy devoted herself to the position of Animal Control Officer in our County. Her facility is adequate and she takes very good care of the animals in her care. They are immediately vetted and recieve medical attention. Once the animals are cleared medically, Sandy does her utmost to find them adoptive homes. She has wonderful success giving County animals a 2nd chance to find loving homes. What is there to complain about?

For years there have been rumors, nasty ones, about Sandy and her animal compound. There are persons that proclaim the animals in her care are living in intolerable conditions and other unfounded accusations. It's interesting to me that those persons have never set foot on Sandy's property or ever asked to view her facility in person.

I know Sandy personally and have been to her facility many, many times. I've even helped her muck out dog kennels, clean ferret cages and empty litter boxes. I've helped to feed and water rabbits, gerbils, hedgehogs and other small animals as well as the large animals such as horses that have been in her care. I have spend many hours trying to console her when an animal in her care (such as an abandoned Iguana found in an apartment building closet and turned over to her by our local law enforcement) passed away despite the meticulous care she expended to save its life.

When an animal goes into Sandy's custody, taking care of it isn't just a job she has to do. Each and every animal finds a place in her heart, and people would be shocked at the lengths she goes to in order to rehabilitate the animal. Even if its a lizard that scares the bejeebers out of the rest of us, Sandy names it Lilly, promptly falls in love with it and cries for days when it dies. That's dedication!

I volunteered to help Sandy at her rescue because I too have a love for animals. I draw the line at Iguanas, but had I had witnessed inadequate facilites or neglect/abuse of any animal in Sandy's care, I would have immediately contacted our County Commission and also State authorities to report Ms. Mallow. I have never witnessed any abused or neglected animals in her care.

Mr. Saffer stated in the above post that cost was a deciding factor in his choice for Animal Welfare Officer, in addition to an earnest concern for welfare of the animals. Sandy, in addition to having numerous resources and affiliations with other animal welfare groups, has proved that she can provide shelter, medical attention and food for numerous types of County animals on a meager budget compared to the large budget ARC has demanded for just a small population of dogs and cats.

It's my personal opinion that the Commission made a wise choice in their decision. I'm extremely satisfied that the Commission is looking out for the best interest of our County animals as well as its taxpayers.
